What does your front door say about you?

With lockdown still going strong, it’s understandable that a lot of people are feeling a bit fed up, down, and isolated. Don’t worry, we know exactly how you feel! So this week, we wanted to bring a bit of fun into your day with a more light-hearted look at windows and doors. More specifically – what your choice of front door colour says about you. You see, everyone has a favourite colour, and if you’re like us, you try to incorporate that colour into your lives, and your surroundings. But did you know that the colour you choose says something about you, particularly when it comes to front doors? In fact, research done by Dulux and colour psychologist Karen Hall has shown that Brits unconsciously make an assumption about a person less than 10 seconds after seeing the colour of their front door. But what kind of assumptions are they? Let’s dive into the world of colour theory and find out!

Why does your front door colour matter?

According to colour psychologist Karen Haller: ‘The front door is traditionally the first impression the outside world gets, and gives an insight into your life. Taking pride in the exterior of your house not only improves the aesthetic of your home but can also add to the perceived value. A small change can make a big difference.’ And frankly, we couldn’t agree more! Colour is a great way to add style and value to your home, and something as simple as replacing your front door is a great place to start.

Blue front doors

Blue is the most common favourite colour worldwide, so let’s start with this! People who choose blue as their favourite colour tend to love harmony and balance. They are reliable, sensitive,

and empathetic – always making an effort to think of others. They also tend to be a bit tidier and cleaner, and like their life to be as stable as possible. A blue front door shows people that you give thought to everything in your life, and have a good sense of clarity in your thoughts.

Black front doors

It’s no coincidence that the most powerful person in the UK has a black front door. (10 Downing Street, just in case you were wondering) While some people might associate black with ‘gothic’ or ‘morbid’ styles, it’s also a colour that gives off powerful vibes – as though the person inside is in control and authoritative. Black front doors are the choice for sophistication and control, and give off the impression that you are a confident person.

Red front doors

Red is another colour with a lot of associations with it – but this time they are spot on. Red, the colour of passion, is often chosen by people who love life to the fullest. They are tenacious, determined and never give up on their goal. A red front door tells you that the person behind it is vibrant, lively and exciting. People who paint their front doors red are often perceived as more welcoming and hospitable hosts too, so great if you throw a lot of parties and get-togethers.

White front doors

White is one o the most common colours of front door in the UK, particularly for rental homes because white PVC is simple to maintain and relatively cheap to use. But choosing a white front door is also an interesting choice, if you’ve made it. It’s the colour of perfection, of cleanliness and open space. A white front door can give people the impression that a clean and organised home lies behind the door. Think of the most minimalist and efficient door you can, and you’ll probably come up with a  white one.

Yellow front doors

Yellow is the colour of spring, of life and of pure joy. It’s one of the most uncommon door colours to see, but we just love it. A yellow front door will attract a lot of second glances and attention thanks to its bright tones – which is exactly why American taxi’s are yellow by the way! Painting your front door yellow shows the world that a cheerful, happy-go-lucky person lives inside, and will nearly always bring a smile to the people looking at it.

Green front doors

Green is the colour of life, growth and harmony. So painting your front door green might mean that a well-balanced, family oriented and nature loving person lived behind it. If you’re looking to create a calm, soothing space that promotes relaxation and wellbeing, it should start with a green front door. Fun fact – a green front door also makes people think you are humble and hard working, which are great qualities to have in a home!

The likelihood is you’ve inherited your front door colour from the last person who owned the home, or even the company that built it. And while it might be perfectly serviceable, wouldn’t it be nice if your front door could showcase a bit more about you, and make you feel as though the property you live in is really, truly yours? Not to mention add some value to your home with better ‘kerb appeal’?
